The Superette Magazine

So yesterday was a pretty exciting day for us…

The last six months we have been very hard at work on a wee project …well, big project really – The Superette Magazine.

A biannual keepsake showcasing our designers each season and encompassing all things we love – a collection of inspirations and aspirations that fuel our day-to-day passions. We wanted a to share with you, our friends and fans, a collaboration of all things Superette. A look beyond the pages of a lookbook and more than just clothes hanging on a rack, The Superette Magazine is designed to be a seasonal and continual source of inspiration.

It seemed fitting that we debut our first issue in the summer season. Just like these first days of summer where new adventures begin, and everything starts to come alive…the first issue of our magazine sings a little to the same tune. When we first embarked on the idea for this project, almost six months ago, we had a big idea and 40 empty pages. Interviews were made, articles were written, and then re-written, and the Superette workroom was soon bursting with summer samples. Six months and now 44 pages later, and here we have it- Our very own magazine.

Until then…here is a little sneak peek….enjoy! xx

New to Superette this month is super cool new guys label A.T.G…pretty much the answer to summer dressing. Simple tees, singlets and of course, a wicked range of boardshorts, perfect to live in this summer!

A.T.G. (All Things Good) is the creation of 31-year-old fashion designer and entrepreneur Stephen “Christo” Christopherson. Taking a fresh and unique approach to fashion, A.T.G. began by Stephen’s reinvention and appropriation of detailed floral prints – in the past, traditionally used only in women’s attire – and applying them to an all mens’ range of high-end street wear.

A.TG’s summer 2010/11 collection continues to use its signature floral prints and original graphics inspired by pirates and sailors of the sea.

Check out the range and pre order your faves quick here!

The road ahead…

With the sun shining outside we can’t help but start to think about the summer months ahead.

What are your summer plans? Road trips, and freedom are creeping quickly up our lists.

We don’t know where we’re going but know its somewhere we want to be. No plans are the best plans!

Into at the mo…

Weekend Markets.

Nothing beats getting up on a Saturday morning and heading off to the markets…usually its the French Markets in Parnell but lately we’ve been exploring further outside of the city…Matakana, Avondale and Coatsville. All amazing – fresh produce, amazing homemade goodies. Our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs…

Mexican Skulls

Known for their bright colours and folkloric symbols, we are obsessed with mexican skulls at the mo! Typically, these sugar skulls are associated with Mexican Day of the Dead festival. Rickie picked up some not unlike these ones pictured above at Venice Beach in California earlier this year.

Daylight Saving.

The rain may still be going strong, but that doesn’t change the fact that its daylight saving is next week….and the sun WILL be out! get ready to turn back your clocks…we’re counting down the days to evening walks while the sun is still shining, leaving work while it is still light, and wines on the deck at sunset.

Taxi Driver.

I rewatched this movie the other day…Jodie Foster’s character Iris in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976) is the picture of everything we love right now about 70’s summer dressing. It made me want to get into denim hot pants with red lips right away! But we might have to save this until a hot day…if you haven’t seen this movie, its a must-see, even if just for the sartorial inspiration!

Bleached hair.

Abbey Lee’s recent (and successful) transition to super bleached hair has made us want to go blonde blonde and blonder this summer.

Studded Chucks.

Never ones to take the easy option…when we want studded chucks, we will have studded chucks. Even if it means staying up half the night on the day before our shoot to hand stud each shoe. Oh and taking a major detour along the way to our Superette Magazine shoot in the Coromandel to pick up studs!

The Superette Magazine going to print.

The most exciting thing EVER!! Stay tuned…and get ready for October 7th.

Plaid for your feet.

There is something so summery and fresh about plaid…a little 50’s retro and a little country, whatever your assosiations with plaid, you can’t argue that it is paired perfectly with summertime – white tees and denim shorts, and makes everything just that little more fun.

We were pleased to see some gingham hit the workroom this week ..The Supra Assualt line-up for summer features slightly slimmer soles and remixed in fabric- fresh gingham to be exact!Forgoing leather, the fabric keeps feet cool and is the perfect way to step light in the heat of the summer.

Available here.

Jacket de jour.

Upgrade your summer wardrobe with this super chic draped leather blazer just arrived from camilla and marc. Made from super soft leather, this jacket feels like a second skin on and is lightweight enough to be the perfect cover up come summer sundown.  We could go on and on about how much you really need this blazer in your wardrobe this season (we’ve justified it enough to ourselves!) but on second thoughts, we think it speaks pretty well for itself…

camilla and marc Adora leather blazer, available here in bone, aubergine and black.

And the winner is…

We couldn’t go past this lovely poem that was emailed to us in our Shakuhachi wishlist competition…

here once was a bright young thing,
which appeared at the beginning of spring.
who? what? where? you may ponder,
a fairy! way down yonder…
here to make all the pretty girls sing!

a shakuhachi dress is like a dream;
whether in floral, blush or cream.
and so many that i want,
but unattainable: such a taunt!
unless, perchance, the fairy does i worthy deem.

my wishlist could continue forever
for those designers, they really are clever.
but not to be greedy,
and avoid seeming needy,
just one, and promise i’ll ask for no more never!

the blush bandage off-shoulder dress, oh i lust
and to wear it… oh i must!!
my 21st on the approach,
and the pressure doth encroach,
pretty please, sprinkle me with your dust!

i shall leave on this note,
dear superette, how i dote!
your blog distracts my day,
and your shop steals my pay,
but in the end, you always have my vote!

So congratulations to Miss Emma von Veh who has won an item of her Shakuhachi wishlist! The Bandage Off Shoulder dress to be exact. No doubt she will be the beautiful birthday girl in this one!!

Much love, the Superette fairy xx

Sass & Bide ‘Papa Sucre’ SS11

We thought you would all love a wee sneak peek at Sass & Bide’s amazing show at London fashion week. Sarah-Jane Clarke (sass) & Heidi Middleton (bide) presented their international spring/summer 2011 collection, ‘PAPA SUCRE’, on the opening day of London Fashion Week. Set within a circular room of the Royal Opera House, the beautifully draped linen created a Circus tent effect and set the scene for the more grown up, more feminine collection.

With a front row that included the likes of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Poppy Delvigne,’s Tim Blanks and Yasmin Sewell, the models strutted down the catwalk to a soundtrack mixed by Dan Single (Dangerous Dan) & James Lyell (Jimmy 2 Sox). The show mix was bluesy rock, with the finale paying tribute to George Michael with an unreleased ‘aeroplane’ remix of George Michaels’ “Faith”.

“Papa Sucre is our imaginary friend – he has been with us from day one, travelled with us for every show and we’ve dedicated this show to him”.

Check out some of the great behind the scenes photos below x

While this collection won’t be hitting stores until next year, the start of Sass & Bide’s new cruise collection ‘Fantastic Projects’ has just gone live on our website for pre order here and features some of the prints that you see below too!

Wish upon a Superette Fairy.

We’re dusting off our wands and getting ready to put on our fairy costumes…well maybe not quite. But close enough….

A week or so ago we asked our Facebook fans to send us their Shakuhachi wishlists…and while we managed to grant you some of your wishes with their re cut of some of your favourite sellout styles, we thought we’d do one better and grant one of our lucky customers their wish from their Shakuhachi wishlists!

So email us at within the next 24 hours with your wishlists(and sweet talk the Superette fairy) and you may just find yourself dusted with some magic!
